World Café on Digitalization and Circular Economy Held in Terme Topolšica, Slovenia

Topolšica, Slovenia – June 5, 2025 

From June 3rd to 5th, the scenic Terme Topolšica hosted the international World Café “Digitalization and Circular Economy” as part of the EU-funded project “Rural communities’ engagement bringing green solutions” – Rural Green. The event brought together partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia to explore sustainable practices and foster innovation in rural development.

The gathering began on Tuesday, June 3rd, with a Steering Committee meeting, where project partners reviewed progress and discussed strategic management. 

On Wednesday, June 4th, participants embarked on a field tour showcasing Savinjsko Šaleška Valley best practices in green innovation. Highlights included visits to Biomasa Nazarje, an inspiring model for biomass energy; Camping Menina, an exemplary case of sustainable tourism; the Komunala Velenje Wastewater Treatment Plant; and Velenje Beach, a former brownfield location, transformed into a natural swimming destination.

Thursday’s agenda featured partner presentations, a “press coffee meeting,” and an fruitfull discussion on digitalization and green economy, with opening address by the Mayor of the Municipality of Šoštanj – Boris Goličnik. The event culminated in a dynamic panel discussion, where experts exchanged insights on how digital solutions can accelerate the circular economy in rural communities.

This international collaboration demonstrates how local green practices and digital innovation can align to build a more sustainable future for Europe’s rural areas.
